Melissa de la Cruz is an aspiring writer, poet, activist, US Army veteran, Filipina with white privilege. she/her/hers #blacklivesmatter #blm #whiteprivilege #whitefragility #antiracism #army #vote
I am a veteran of the US Army
and a graduate of Yale and the University of Chicago.
I am biracial - I have a Filipino father and a Caucasian mother - and I am largely influenced by my Filipino culture. Despite this, I acknowledge that by appearances alone I have many times been afforded white privilege. My poem PRESSURE & COMPASSION describes my visceral reaction to George Floyd’s murder and the ensuing nationwide division. It is a response to those who continue to challenge the notion of white privilege, and exhibits my personal feelings on what needs to happen next. The views here are expressly my own - from the viewpoint of one biracial female American veteran.
